Thank you for that information, Kay. It is much appreciated. I now have the marriage certificate for my GGF Robert (b c 1857 Ireland d 1920 Chester UK) and his father is down as being Robert Shire - farmer, so it is possible that the Robert refered to in the book is actually my 2xgreat grandfather. I do not have a copy of the book. What is the best way to get hold of it?
I had a telephone conversation yesterday with one of my living Shire relatives who did some family tree research herself a few years ago. She and her nephew got stuck due to the destruction of the records in the Dublin fire. I am awaiting the arrival of the data that they collected to confirm or deny that the family lived in the area you mention.
Addionally she told me that my Great Grandfather Robert had brothers and sisters who emmigrated to the US. I am now very keen to know of anyone who has ancestors with a brother Robert who remained in the UK. Maybe someone out there has managed to trace my family further back already.
My geat grandfather was a policeman in the Cheshire Constabulary until he had to retire through ill-health. I gather he was known as Black Bob, possibly due to the fact that his hair was very dark and he had a beard too. My aunt also had virtually black hair. Another family trait, mostly amongst the males, appears to be a tendancy to be left-handed. Any bells ringing?
I would love to make contact with some of my US relations.
