Sorry that I have taken so long to reply. I have progressed further with my research and the following has now been confirmed:
My 2x great grandfather was Robert Shire, farmer, b c 1824 in Ireland, probably the Rathkeale area. He died 28th July 1870 in Ballingrane, Co Limerick. this probably confirms that he was the Robert Shire identified in Griffiths Valuation as renting land in Ballingrane.
I have not confirmed his wife's name as yet but it could have been Arabella Switzer. The evidence pointing towards this is a) a marriage in Limerick Cathedral of a Robert Shire, farmer and an Arabella Switzer in July 1847 and b) the naming of his son's first daughter, Arabella Hannah Shire, Hannah being the name of her maternal grandmother. If this is the correct person, then Robert's father was Nicholas Shire.
The son of Robert Shire was my great grandfather, Robert Nicholas Shire, b c 1856 Ireland. The date of his father's death was discovered in a family bible that once belonged to him and enabled me to obtain his death certificate. Present at the death of Robert b c 1824 wasJulia M Shire. I have no idea who she was.
What was the name of your grandmother? What evidence do you have that would suggest that my great grandfather was your Gran Uncle? Do you have names/dates of any of your grandmother's siblings?
Looking forward to hearing from you, especially as we may be cousins. Rosemary
