Margaret Shine (abt 1818, Ireland)
Hi, Members. I'm looking for the origins of Margaret above. She sailed to South Australia on HMS Buffalo in 1836, House Servant from Portsmouth UK, age 17.
Shortly after she married my ancestor Richard Mew, a Royal Marine born in Uckfield, Sussex, UK. They had 3 daughters in Australia: Mary Ann Adelaide, Margaret and Eliza; then a further daughter Martha born at sea while the family was returning permanently to England in 1845.
In the 1841 census there is no evidence of other Shine family members in Portsmouth, nor much evidence of parents or siblings elsewhere in England.
IGI Irish birth records do show a baptism that just about fits: 12 October 1818, Margaret, to Michael Shine & Mary Muldoon, Saint Peter's, Athlone & Drum, Roscommon.
I've no idea whether this is just one of many unrecorded possibilities, so unlikely to be what i'm looking for.
Perhaps someone has researched this family and knows for sure that Margaret is accounted for "elsewhere"?
Thanks. Paul.
