Re. William E DIMENT - there is no suggestion in family lore that a SHINER was responsible for his existence - I realise re-reading my post that it came over that way.He is said to be the result of an encounter with a sailor on a late night train from Waterloo to Portsmouth - I had wondered why 14 year old Julia would be travelling alone from London, but a family reunion with her London cousins would explain this.William E went on to do rather well for himself, and ended his days as the headmaster of a private school.
I saw the FreeBMD ref for Kenneth FARWELL marrying Julia DIMENT, but as FreeBMD is not complete yet, I initially rejected him as a possibility because the only person of that name I could find on the 1881 census was born in 1880 (ie would have been 21 against Julia's 37).I think the LDS search engine must have been having an off day, because I searched again just now and found the correct person.Seems Julia's happiness was short lived, as BMD records his death aged 37 in Sep 1902, in Portsmouth.
I downloaded the 1901 image for Charles and Caroline SHINER (goes over 2 pages), to learn that they had 4 children at this time: 38 Piedmont Road, Plumstead Charles SHINER Head 51 Engineer Fitter Symondsbury, Dorset Caroline SHINER Wife 45 Symondsbury, Dorset Walter C SHINER Son 19 Engine Fitter Symondsbury, Dorset Sidney B SHINER Son 12 Plumstead Kent Alfred SHINER Son 10 Plumstead, Kent Ivy R SHINER Daur 3 Plumstead Kent
I am particularly interested in Ivy R.I have an ongoing search to find a lady related to my family that according to a letter I have, would have been 85 on Dec 7th 1982.Ivy Ruth SHINER birth is registered Mar 1/4 1898 in Woolwich.Given 6 weeks to register a birth, this means that 7th December 1897 could well be her birth date.If so, she may be the mother of actor Arthur PENTELOW (see http://www.corrie.net/profiles/actors/pentelow_arthur.htmlhttp://www.corrie.net/profiles/actors/pentelow_arthur.html and http://www.berridge99.freeserve.co.uk/emm/cast/henry.htm)http://www.berridge99.freeserve.co.uk/emm/cast/henry.htm).The letter is written by him, informing my Grandmother of his mother's death on Nov 21st 1982, and recalling childhood memories of holidays spent with the Dorset cousins.
I though that Carrie SHINER was still alive in the 1930s because my uncle says that she attended his Christening in Wyke Church in 1935.He may well be mistaken. My Great Aunt will know more and will surely remember an Uncle Charles.Weymouth would of course be the right place of death for Wyke Regis.
