Shendaffer or Shintaffer
I did the following research and the name is spelled Shindaffer, Shindafer in the documents:
Court Orders: 1794, September Greenbrier Co., VA Court Orders transcribed and compiled by Helen S. Stinson, p. 157. George Shindaffer and wife are paid 53 cents for
one days attendance each as witnesses for Robert Renick vs Patrick Murphy.
Deed: 1796 Sims Index of old West Virginia Land Records, Book 3, p. 501. "There is granted by the Said Commonwealth unto George Shindafer assignee of Phillip Shindafer assignee of Thomas Kincaid a certain tract or parcel of land containing 246 acres..."
1796, December 27, Ibid., p. 196. "On motion of George Shindaffer to obtain an injuction vs James Russell on a judgement of this court, court orders that judgement at common law be stayed until matter can be heard in equity."
1797, June 1, Ibid., p. 205-6. "Elizabeth Shindaffer vs Thomas Kincaid in case. All matters in difference between them submitted to arbitration of Samuel McClung, Wm. Feamster, Richard Humphris, and Jonathan Mathews and their award will be the judgement of the court." (note: George Shintaffer's daughter Elizabeth would have been about 20-24 years old at this time).
1798, Thursday, 29 Mar, Ibid., p. 219.
"James Russell vs George Shindaffer in case, deft.pleads not guilty. Ordered George Shindaffer to pay Philip Shindaffer and Charlotte Shindaffer for one day attendance each as witness for him vs. James Russell." (Philip and Charlotte are children of George Shintaffer).
Land and Tax: 1782-1803 Greenbrier County, Virginia Land and Tax Records, Salt Lake Family History Library film 0163716, pp. 103, 111, 118, 126, 134, 142, 150, 159.
Surname spelled as follows: Shintoffer, Shentapher, Shintapher, Shintopher.
Note: George Shindaffer was in the index for Wills, Inventories, Sale Bills,Etc, but could not locate #55 in the record (film 0249992).
Will Appraisement: 1805 Will Books, 1777-1969 of Greenbrier County, VA, with index. Salt Lake City Family History Library films 0595029 (index) and 0595214 (pp.192-193).
List of belongings included 1 Bible. The appraisement of estate was taken 27 Feb 1805 and presented in the June Court, 1805.
It appears our George is the same George Shendaffer married to Dorthea. Since a wife is not in any of these records (except in 1794 "and wife"), but the children are, she probably died earlier than George. Any thoughts? Diann
