Yes that Valentine is my ancestor. He shows up in the census as Shirey twice but his church records list him as Scheurer and he is buried as Shirrar. His descendants go by Shirer except for one son who adopted the spelling Shirar and moved to Indiana.
Since posting this message I have since found Valentine was living in Berks Co where his oldest three sons were born and show up in the birth/baptism records for DeLong's Reformed Church in maxatawny Twp. I am going to post a message about this as I have recently found some more information on the oldest son.
Thanks for your keen eye. It is hard to differentiate all the derivatives of our names. I have found the church records though to be the most reliable because the ministers were also German and were educated and familiar with the correct ways to spell the names. Valentine has been seen in tax/census records as Scherer, Sherrer, Shire, Schyre, Shirey, Shirer and some others. The church records have consitantly been Scheurer and that is what family oral history has said and that the family was from Switzerland. The new post will expound on that.
