You're wondering why I am researching the Shires name when my last name is Williams? First of all, Williams is my married name. Second, can you imagine trying to research that name anyway? It's as bad as Smith, and I have that one also. Thirdly, Shires is just one of the hundreds (literally) of names I am researching. And they are all my ancestors!
You only have to go back to your grandparents to find three surnames to add to your own:your father's mother, your mother's mother, and your mother's father all had different surnames, usually. Then compound that with each generation, and they add up (or multiply) quickly.
Some of my other surnames are Hamlin, Carlton, Godfrey, Watson, Haines, Arnold, Ayer, Baldwin, Bigelow, Bliss, Bristol, Chamberlain, Clark, Day, Dickinson, Fenn, Foote, Gaylord, Hine, Kimball, Ladd, Loomis, . . . the list goes on forever! I just have not discovered them all yet.
Again, thanks for your reply. No harm in asking, was there?
