(*Mary Emmeline Van Pelt Shive's sister, Jane H. Van Pelt, had married Hilliard Howell, possibly Archibald H., in 1838. Could this Howell be a connection?)
Mary Emmeline Van Pelt, Mrs. Allen Shive was a daughter of Abraham Van Pelt (1786-1856) and his wife Jane Reed/Reid (c.1789-1862), of Cabarrus County, NC. I am descended from Abraham's younger brother, or half brother, William S. Van Pelt (c.1799-1851) and his wife Mary "Polly" Carrigan (c.1799-bef.1850). Abraham and William Van Pelt lived close together, and both had a lot of children. There has been some considerable confusion as to which children belonged to which man.... and the fact that, in later generations, cousins often married doesn't help to clear things up any.
I decided to start all over, and make as clear and documented an account as I could of all of the children, and hope it might make things more clear, for myself and others. I also hope to learn more about Simon Van Pelt (c.1738-1799) who was (probably) the father of Abraham and William. He is said to have come from New York to Bertie County, NC with his parents in the 1750s, and to Mecklenburg County, NC around 1778. Abraham and William were both born in Mecklenburg Co.
