Reuben A. Shorey, son of James and Mary (Tozier) Shorey was born May 20, 1825 in Salmon Falls, NH. Our family photograph album has pictures labeled Uncle Frank Shorey and Uncle Abe Shorey and Henry Shorey. Do not know how they are related, but think they may have been brothers of Reuben. At some point Reuben moved to West Waterville (now Oakland, Maine. He married Clarinda Branch in Watervilleand their children were all born on West Waterville.
ResearchinThe History of Kennebec County pg 1039 on the Town of Sidney-West Sidney revealed that aÒJames Shorey was the first traderÓ there. Sidney was a part of Vassalboro in 30 January 1792. The History of Kennebec County was published in the 1890Õs and on pg 1065 on the Town of Oakland (once West Waterville) we read that ÒThe following were here 60-90 years ago.....James and Reuben Shores.Ó which could mean from 1800 to 1830. Subsequent research in the MOCA records does not show a James Shorey buried in any Oakland or Vassalboro plots.
Do not know if the above are my ancestors James and Reubenshorey or not as there was another Reuben in the Waterville area and he and his wife are buried in the Waterville cemetery. My Reuben is buried in the Fairfield cemetery.
Children of Reuben and Clarinda who lived to adulthood were Adrastus Abram, Belinda also called Melinda, Charles, Sumner Bradford and George Elden. I know nothing about Adrastus. Belinda married William Ricker and they had a daughter Viola who married a Preble.
Charles , Sumner and George may have worked in theDamariscotta area as they married ladies from that area.
Reuben, Charles, Sumner and George and their wives moved to Oregon for a couple of years. Charles remained but the other families returned. Sumner lived in the Damrariscotta area and Reuben and George moved to Fairfield where they established a novelty wood shop and built lawn swings. Sumner's descendants are the only one who carry on the surname of this particular Shorey line.
Can anyone add to this information? Need to find the parents of James Shorey who married Mary Tozier and more informationon James and Mary.
