Joe Shorkey was born in New York State, and lived all his adult life in Bay City except for about 20 years during the middle of his life.He had six children with my grandmother, left for 20 years, and came back and had 4 more.My Dad was from the second set of kids. All had the name of Shorkey. All were bapized at Visitation Church in Bay City. Here are the names of the other children - if married and I don't know married name there is a ______, and if s/he had no children, there is a * after the name. Each lived in Bay City, unless specified. first set of children born in the late 1800's: Roy, (Kawkawlin) Amanda * _______ Pearl * Dion Gladys * Stephenson (Flint) Hazel Miller Tressa * (died in her early 20's of diabetes) Second set: Annabelle * _______ Paul* Clayton Merle (had difficulties after WWI; was in Jacksons prison, family lost track of him.don't know where he lived or if he had children or if he is still alive.) I don't know if Hazel is alive, either. Others are dead.
My Dad had several uncles who lived in Banks in Bay City. One I remember was Uncle Henry, who was a fisherman.
Recently there was an obituary in the Bay City Times for someone I had met as a child, but did not know.My Dad had always referred to her as a cousin. Her obit is what got me re-interested in finding the Chartier - Sharkey - Shorkey connection.
Her name was Mildred Shorkey Redmond (October 4, 1912 - July 5, 2000) Bay City Michigan.Parents listed as John Chartier Shorkey and Mary Gohm Shorkey.Raised by mother and stepfather William Thormahlen.Baptised Visitation Church Oct. 13, 1912.Preceeded in death by 2 brothers Louis Norman Sharkey and Lawrence Edward Shorkey.
This is the first Shorkey obit I remember seeing with all three versions of the name in it.
