Catharine's name in the record of her 1783 record of her marriage to Jacob Schreid spells her maiden name "Gutterer"; the spelling of her father's 1794 will which has Jacob Schrit as an Ex. spells her father's name as Goddettle; the birth record of her son Jacob (my ancestor) Jacob Schreit and wife lists a sponsor of their daughter Elizabeth as Barbara "Guttulin" who is probably a relative of Catherine's.While these four records give three spellings for Jacob Shride's last name they are at least similar.Catharine's maiden name spellings are so different that they present a special challenge in tracing her family.
A NEW INDEX, LANCASTER COUNTY,PENNSYLVANIA BEFORE THE FEDERAL CENSUS VOLUME 5 by Hawbaker and Groff indicates that in the records letters are often interchanged. They recommend that the following be checked: A=E; B=P; C= G or K;I=E, Y or J; O=E; SM= SCM or SHM: T=D; V=F or B; W=V.I find this of some help for Catherine (and Jacob) - expecially the T=D but not a solution in finding other references to find Catharine's family.
I recently sought help and advice with a research request to the Heritage Center Library, Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University.I have found this source to be exceptionally helpful. On the subject of the best spelling for Catharine's parents name the researcher suggested Godatel or Gotadel would be likely choices based on the spelling for the 10 Michael records in the Lancaster County Militia and the pronunciations of those spellings since d and t are interchangeable in German translations.I am posting more Michael Godatel/Gotadel information in a separate GenForum entry unter Michael's name.
I am hoping to hear from other researchers of Catharine's family so we can share information.
