John Seibert & Catherine Snapp in Champaign Co. OH early 19th century
There appears to be more than one John and Catherine Seibert (and variant spellings) in Champaign Co. OH during the early 19th century. One couple lived in Urbana Township and appears to be John Seibert, son of Wendel, and his wife, Catherine Bowers Seibert, daughter of Henry Bowers and Elizabeth Young. For a long time it was believed they were the parents of my ancestor, Lydia, born 1817, who married Christian Eicher in 1836 in Champaign Co.
However, I could not reconcile the fact that nowhere was she listed as a daughter, heir, etc. to the Urbana couple.
Then I came across a transcription of a deed excerpt:
Section 23 Township 3 Range 12 (Adams Township)
SW 1/4 quarter 160.24a 17 April 1843~patent to John Seybert of Champaign Co. Book T Page 7
SE 1/4 quarter 160a 15 January 1851 Noah & Leanna Sibert and David & Hannah Groves "land which John Sibert died seized" to Christian Eicher, Jr.
There's also a deed in Johnson Township:
NE 1/4 quarter 160.7a 29 December 1827 David& Hannah Lung (Long?) to John Seibert Book H. Page 144
So, it appears that the Johnson Township/Adams Township Siberts are my line. I read in Raymond Martin Bell's book published in 1982 that John Sibert was likely the son of Bernhard (Barnet) Sibert who died in Fayette Co. PA in 1810. And Bernhard was a son of Hans Bernhard Sibert born 1717 in Eitaweiler, Germany and died in 1801 in Strassburg, Shenandoah Co., VA.
Mr. Bell also stated that John Sibert (1787-1850) was married to Catherine Snapp. These folks are buried in Spring Grove Cemetery there in Champaign Co.
If anyone is descended from or knows about this family, I would appreciate corresponding. Happy to share any info I have that might be helpful and would love to add more information about this family to my notes.
