Found something interesting as I'm going through the 1860 Stanly Co, NC census. Have long wondered what the connecton was between the Plylers and Sides. Here's part of it. 1860p 37B 526:528 - Daniel Plyler 35 (supposed to have married a Rachel -could this have been George Sides's daughter Rachel b c 1818? Note the George in the household) Cely E18 Edmund 14 Mary E12 George 10 Henry 10 Daniel L B 2 527:529Tobias A Plyler 37 Mary 45 Daniel 18 H Davis 16 Elizabeth14 George(C?)13 Francis 8 Mary B 4 Julia 2 Elizabeth Sides 68
Both Tobias and Daniel are sons of Henry Plyler. George Sides b c 1783 m Elizabeth Lyle March 12, 1813. One daughter was named Polly Philana b May 15, 1816 (Polly being the short name for Mary, the age fits, above), If we assume that George had died by 1860 (he and Elizabeth Lyle are on the 1850 census at p 26B 377:377-he's 67 years old at the time and she is 55) then that very well could be his widow in her daughter's household. Notice also that there is a George and Elizabeth, children in the household.
Who was Henry Plyler's Wife? Richard Perry, another researcher, says that Henry Plyler's wife's name was Elizabeth and we assert a Sides connection because there are a number of Sides/Plyler ties within baptismal records listed in the Dutch Buffalo Creek book.Candidate wife would be Elizabeth Sides b c 1802, daughter of Christopher Sidesb c 1765-1847m Mary Ester Lipe. It's also possible that Elizabeth is a daughter of Daniel m Rachel Hartsell. Henry Plyler's children: Tobias b 1823, Daniel b 1824, Edmond b 1827, Ester b 1833, Polly b 1831 and Moses b 1835. David Moose and Rachel Sides Moose, Christopher Sides & Wife, and Matthias Sides & Elizabeth Moose variously served as baptismal sponsors for a some of these children.Again, a THEORY, don't let this harden into concrete as a fact if you know differently!
Now on to George Sides b c 1783m Elizabeth Lyle. (He is in the 1850 census on p 26B at 377:378, couple of doors away from Caswell Sides, his son). We believe him to be a son of Daniel Sides b c 1761m Rachel Hartsell b c 1770. George had a daughter, Rachel b 1818. Circumstantially, Coy Hatley, who has written a couple of books on the Hatley line has a note that says that William Nelson Sides had a brother George and both were children of Daniel Sides m Rachel Hartsell. Another researcher, Helen Garner, said that Nelson was brother to George, and probably sons of Daniel Sides m Rachel Hartsell. (Side note: Since William AND the widow of Nelson Sides are side by side in the census, suggest that it's NOT William Nelson but William AND Nelson-notice at p 27B 389:390 > 391:392 that William Sides and Nelson are side by side, and there is a Rachel age 80 in William's household)
A few other items of interest: In 1850 p 26B 380:381, in Isaac Lowder's 35 m Lydia 25, there are two children named William M3 and Chaney 1/12. Since William Sides 47m Cheney 57 don't have children (but Rachel, presumably mother) in household, suggest that this may be his daughter Lydia Sides. Next door to Lydia is 381:382 Simeon Hatley 51, and a Selea, 31, in household . George had daughter Seyle, born 1820, according to Dutch Buffalo Book, Henry Sides as sponsor. She's a little young to be the parent to the others in this household, though, so those have to be children of his first wife, Anna Rogers, who died in 1848.Simeon's son, Simeon Jr. married what appears to be George's daughter Elizabeth b 1824 - 1870 census p 90 108:108
One more land mystery: notice that the following people have the same value of real estate owned. (See 1850 26B > 27B) - Caswell Sides (son of George) 150 -Simeon Hatley (with perhaps George's daughter in household ) 150. -Charlie Sides (next door to William and Nelson's widow) 150 -William Sides 150 -Martha Hatley Sides 150 Now this may be purely coincidental - It's interesting that the value of the land, as opposed to varying amounts all around them, is the same. If we surmise that perhaps this might have been an apportionment for the heirs of Daniel Sides m Rachel Hartsell, that could be one explanation.
Conclusion: Suggest that George Sides b 1783 m Elizabeth Lyle is a son of Daniel Sides m Rachel Hartsell. (Side note: this is NOT George Miller Sides, b c 1823 m Ithama Cagle, who is a son of Leonard Sides b 1766 who married Katherine Miller (will in Stanly Co, NC).
