Charles,
James Franklin Simril, son of James Barry Simril & his cousin-wife Violet Davidson Simril, was indeed listed as
"Idiotic" in both the 1850 & 1860 federal census records.
His parents were later listed without James F. in 1870 York Co., SC, federal census, and without him in 1880 federal census in Arkansas.
James & Violet moved to Ouachita Co., Ark., in 1871 and appear in the Bradley Co., Ark., federal census in 1880.
Then at least James moved to Texas where he died in 1885
according to a note I found. But I've been unable to confirm the Texas move myself.
As for "Idiotic", I have no information as to the nature of James F.'s mental disability. Whether it was from birth or from an injury or illness sometime later is unknown.
