Antoinette--
I read with interest your post on the Sinex/Sinnickson/Broer/Broor familiy.Along with another research, Earl Colley of NY, I am researching a Swedish settler named Brewer Sinnexon of New Castle Co., DE.Earl's theory, which seems plausible to me, is that our ancestor, Edward Green, was likely a son-in-law to Brewer Sinnexon--as was Humphrey Best (I am also a Best descendant, although not proven to be from Humphrey). Earl brought the following New Castle Co. deed to light:
Deed.On Apr 1685. Brewer SENNEXEN of Christiana Creek, husbandman to Humphry BEST & Edward GREEN both of Philadelphia. Brewer SENNEXEN for £60 granted to Humphry BEST & Edward GREEN a one full half part, being the lower section, of a tract of land by patent from Gov. Edmond ANDROS dated 5 March 1676 granted to Peter THOMASON & since on 4 Dec 1682 by Olla THOMASON the brother & only heir of Peter THOMASON, dec. to Peter OALSON, alias Pecco, late of Christiana Creek, planter, who by deed dated 9 Dec 1682 granted all the same land to Brewer SENNEXSON [sic], the said land being White Clay Creek above the falls bounded by land of John NOMMER containing 220 acres.Signed Brewer SENNEXEN. Delivered in the presence of Eph. HERMAN & Daniel SMITH.Recorded 23 April 1685. (A1:101)
I also am compiling a Word file on the Sinnexon name (and variants) that appear in the five volumes of published New Castle Co., DE deeds beginning in 1673 (however, there are gaps in the published records). I will be happy to send you this file as an attachment if you are interested.
One other brief reference to the "Sinexon" family appears in the book "Swedish Settlements on the Delaware, Vol. II 1638-1664" by Amandus Johnson, p. 540: "In the possession of the SINEXON family is an old iron chest which was probably brought from Europe by one of the early settlers."
Antoinette, do you have any idea how your Sinnick Broer is related to "my" Brewer Sinnexson? Are they the same man with the names reversed? Also, I'm presuming that Sinnick Broer is the "Senica Brewer" who appears in the early New Castle Co. deeds? Here is the earliest deed I have on this person:
p. 12
Deed.On 1 Apr 1679.Whereas Justa ANDRIES did on 24 Nov 1674 granted to me the said Hans PETERSON, the one half of the land of Senica BREWER situated on Christianna Creek bounded by land granted unto Senica BREWER & company with Walraven JANSEN, Andries VINN [note from DS: I’m assuming these are two men, based on the punctuation. However, this could be four men’s surnames] by patent from Governor Lovelace. Now Hans PETERSON granted to Andries URIANSEN all the same half of the land which did belong to Senica BREWER excepting the said 66 foot of land next to the street towards Andries URIANSEN also half of the wood land which is behind Andries’ garden [ed note: “Andries the finds land”] which pieces of land Hans PETERSON sold unto Mathias Mattyasen SMITH so that the lands sold unto Andries URIANSEN was one half of the land of Senica BREWER, excepting that parcel sold to Mathias Mattysen SMITH & his successor Brewer SENICKA [sic] having married his the said Andries URIANSEN widow, the said Andries being dec.Hans PETERSON make over to Brewer SENICA [sic] all the said land.Signed Hans PETERSON.Delivered in the presence of Hendrick SIMMONS and Eph. HARMAN (A1:34).
[Note from DS: could “Senica” be a variant of SINNEXEN?]
Also, you probably already have this, but my file contains the following Sinnexen/Harmonson deed reference:
pp. 99-100
Deed on 20 Feb 1702.Joseph MOORE of the county of New Castle & Anna Maria his wife, daughter & heirs of Cornelius YORAS, late of the county, dec. to James SINNEXEN of the said county who intermarried in Dorcas HARMANSON, one of the daughters & co-heirs of John HARMONSON and Anna HARMONSON the other daughter & co-heir of John HARMANSON.Joseph MOORE & Anna Maria his wife for a competent sum of money paid by James SINNEXEN & Dorcas HARMANSON on behalf of Anna HARMANSON have granted to James SINNEXEN & Dorcas his wife & Anna HARMANSON all estate right & interest which they the said Joseph MOORE & Anna Maria his wife now have in a lot of land situated in the town of New Castle, the inheritance of Cornelius YORAS, dec. & late in the tenure of Joseph DAVIES.Signed Joseph MOORE & Anna Maria MOORE.Delivered in the presence of Joseph WOOD & Grif JONES.Recorded 1 June 1703.(B2:229)
The name "Dorcas" interests Earl and me a great deal in that it is a name used repeatedly through several generations in our New Castle Co., DE Bishop family [Nicholas and Dorcas Bishop's son, Nicholas Bishop(II) married Hannah Bracken, dau. of Thomas Bracken and wife Martha Green, dau. of Edward Green and possibly the granddau. of Brewer Sinnexon] Earl and I have wondered for a very long time as to the maiden name of Dorcas, wife of Nicholas Bishop. This couple's names appear as parents on their children's baptismal records in the Holy Trinity/Old Swede's church. Thus, I'm always on the lookout for families in this area who use the given name of Dorcas. (I do realize, however, this is a New Testament name that could be used by various families.) Also, I might add that Nicholas Bishop married a second time to Mrs. Esther/Hester Smith, widow of John Smith, after his first wife Dorcas died. I found the Smith references in the Brewer Sinexon deed of 1679 and 1685 to be interesting, but of course we're dealing with a common name.
If any of the above ties in with your research, I would be very interested in comparing more information with you.
