I'm writing because I'm desperate and need some guidance. Let me explain, please: My family history says that my ggggrandmother, Eleanor, was married to an Elias Watts (Surry County, NC as Eliaz Watz in 1800). Supposedly, Elias Watts got killed by Indians in 1808. They had 5 known children at the time-Ambrose (1798 Ga by 1850 census), William (1800), Elias Jr. (1803), Ellen (1805) and Nelly (1807). The latter two married Napier brothers. They disappear from 1800 until 1820 when they show up in Cabell County, Va (now WV, Wayne County) and we can trace them from there.
My family heresay history states that Eleanor married (or at least had 2 children -Perlina (1812) & Daniel Jackson (1817-my gggrandfather, by) Isaac Skidmore. Isaac apparently got homesick and went back to the "old country" (don't know what is meant by this; maybe Pendleton County where he may have had a family). Anyway, I could NOT make a connection to an Isaac Skidmore in a path from Surry County, NC to accross the river from WV in Kentucky until I found a John Skidmore who got married in 1822 just 25 miles from where my family shows up. I did find a Micajah Skidmore on the Cabell County Tax List for 1817 (or there abouts) but can never find him again anywhere.
After all these years, I teamed up with a direct male descendent of Jospeh Skidmore of Pendleton County and had 46Y chromozones DNA tests run. My results are posted on the Skidmore DNA project and it says that I'm 3 generations removed from Henry Skidmore of Surry County Group with all 46 chromozones matching exactly with others in the group. My teammate's DNA is in the name of Denzel Skidmore; we are not closely related.
I think my family may have come via Ft. Blackwell(?), Lee County Va and crossed over into Ky about Harlan or Floyd County, Ky. I find Skidmores in Floyd County and in Greenup County, Ky with names like Joseph, John, Eleanor, etc but can't really make any connections.
I'm 75 years old and have searched these last 19 years even by going through books at Marshall University, Huntington, WV; A family relative who is deep into this seached the Cabell County records and the Charleston, WV state Capitol archives. We are a loss as to which descendent of Henry's could be the ggggrandfather.
I would like help in the following: 1. What does within 3 generations on the DNA test tell me? was it after the conception with Eleanor (ggggrandmother) or after the grandchild of Henry met her? 2. I'm open to any suggestions you might have as to who my ggggrandfather might be
Thank you for any guidance.
