The SLAGLE Y-DNA Project was established to determine the common ancestors of the early SLAGLE families living in Colonial America. If your SLAGLE family has been in the U.S. by or prior to the Revolutionary War and you are a direct SLAGLE male descendant, you are invited to participate. Some of the variations of the name of SLAGLE are SLAGGLE, SLAGEL, SLAGLEY, SCHLEGEL, SCHLOEGEL.To date, we have 15 participants and results are in for 14.So far there are two well documented lines. Most who have participated opted for the 25-marker Y-DNA Test and some upgraded to a 37-marker Y-DNA test.Project at .
Line 1: Henry SLAGLE of VA; Frederick SLAGLE & John SLAGLE of NC. Henry SLAGLE, born 1765, married Christina KELCHNER, on 2 May 1786, Shenandoah Co., VA.Their son Absolom SLAGLE, born 1792-1798, stated on the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 Censuses and his War of 1812 Pension Application that he was born in North Carolina. It is presumed that Henry SLAGLE's father was John SLAGLE who was living in Shenandoah Co., Virginia in 1783 with 10 whites on the List of Alex'r HITE and also listed in the Shenandoah Co., Virginia, Personal Property Tax Lists from 1782 to 1786.John SLAGLE and his family left Shenandoah Co., Virginia shortly after 1786 and is believed to have gone to North Carolina.Henry SLAGLE stayed behind in Shenandoah County as he had just married Christina KELCHNER and they were living with her parents in 1786 and 1787.In 1788, they were living by themselves and by 1789, they were gone from Shenandoah County and records indicate they went to North Carolina where apparently his family had moved. When members of Christina’s family moved to Wythe Co., Virginia, Henry and Christina went there for a few years, but returned to North Carolina. In 1805, they again returned to Wythe Co., Virginia, and around 1808 went to Washington Co., Virginia.
The SLAGLE Y-DNA PROJECT confirms with Y-DNA testing that Henry SLAGLE, born 1765, of Virginia was indeed related to Frederick SLAGLE, b. 1772 [his father was probably Frederick SLAGLE, Sr.] and John SLAGLE, b. 1787 [his father Charles Edward SLAGLE, b. 1746], of Lincoln, Rowan, Macon, and Yancey Cos., NC. There was a 37/37 marker match between the descendants of Henry SLAGLE of VA/NC and Frederick SLAGLE of NC.There was a 36/37 marker match [one mutation] between the descendants ofHenry SLAGLE, b. 1765, of VA and John SLAGLE, b. 1787,who married Barbara SHUFFORD.There was also a 36/37 marker match [one mutation] between the above Frederick SLAGLE, b. 1772, of NC and the above John Slagle, b. 1787, of NC.
Line 2:John Christian SCHLEGEL of Berks Co., PA and Peter SLAGLE of Rowan Co., NC. There was another SLAGLE line in Rowan Co., NC, that of Peter SLAGLE [b. bef. 1752] who had three sons. One son went to Wythe Co., VA, and the two others went to Wayne Co., KY, with one going on to Scott Co., IL. The participant from this line proved to be a match with the John Christian SCHLEGEL line of Berks Co., PA. John Christian SCHLEGEL had a son Peter who disappeared from the records in the mid-1770's in PA. Mary Irene SAVAGE, author of “John Christian Schlegel of Berks County, Pennsylvania and Descendants,” had thought he had died. With results from the SLAGLE Y-DNA PROJECT, most likely this Peter SLAGLE is the Peter SLAGLE of Rowan Co., NC.
There was 36/37 match [one mutation] between the SCHLEGEL participant who lives on the original SCHLEGEL Farm in Fleetwood, Berks Co., PA and B. SLAGLE, Mary Irene Savage’s cousin. There was a 36/37 match [one mutation] between B. SLAGLE [Mary Irene Savage’s cousin] and J. SLAGLE, descendant of Peter SLAGLE of Rowan Co., NC.There was a 35/37 match [two mutations] between J. SCHLEGEL of Berks Co., PA and J. SLAGLE, descendant of Peter SLAGLE of Rowan Co., NC.
Lines 3, 4, 5, & 6.
There are four other participants who did not match anyone else. For now we will say that there are 4 other separate SLAGLE lines. Two of these participants most likely should have matched Line 1.
3. John SLAGLE, who married his cousin Catherine SLAGLE in Baltimore, MD, in 1792, migrated to Washington Co., TN.
4. John SLAGLE, born 1817, married Mary WATSON, in Lincoln Co., NC.
5. Jacob SLAGLE, born before 1750, of Hampshire Co., [West] VA.
6. John SLAGLE, born 1787-1792, Shenandoah Co., VA, married Elizabeth WISEMAN, went to Gallia Co., OH.
