I am searching for a connection between the SLATON family of Auburn, Lee Co., AL and the SMYTHE family of the same place.
Having just returned from a three day research trip to Auburn, AL, I found John Slaton, his wife Sarah Jane, and two of their young children, buried in the SMYTHE family plot at Pine Hill Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in Auburn. There are eight people buried in this Smythe family plot:
Thomas Slaton b. 8/25/1826 d. 11/29/1862 Sarah Jane Slaton b. 3/4/1824 d. 6/16/1902 Sarah J., infant dau. of Thomas and Sarah Jane Slaton, d. 11/8/1850 John Thomas Slaton, son of Thomas and Sarah Jane, b. 12/31/1857 d. 8/26/1858 aged 7 months and 26 days. Eva A. Smythe b. 7/11/1855 d. 2/17/1925 Birdie Smythe b. 8/17/1878 d. 4/25/1938 Geo. L. Huguley b. 3/30/1873 d. 3/1/1947 Annie Smyth Huguley, wife of Geo L. Huguley, b. 4/16/1877 d. 1/17/1944
Does anyone know how the Slatons and Smythes were related?Could his wife's maiden name have been Smythe?Could one of their children who made it to adulthood have married a Smythe?
Thomas Slaton, b. 1826 GA was the son of Littleberry Slaton/Slatton b. 1778 and Henrietta Holcombe, one of their nine children.
In his book "The Descendants of Wm. & Abraham Slatten" by Wm. John Slayton, Jr., on page 60 he has Thomas Slaton b. 1826 as having died in Cataula, Harris Co., GA.If this is so, it seems unusual to have transported a body to Auburn, Lee Co., AL in 1862 for burial, given the times and distances then. There is also an error/typo on page 60 of the book which lists Thomas' birthdate as 3/4/1824.This is his wife's birthdate (Sarah Jane).Thomas' birthdate was 8/25/1826.All dates taken from the old gravestones, of which I have photos.
Any help in solving this Slaton-Smythe relationship is much appreciated.
