Another descendant, Becky Heaney, has been trying to connect this group. There are several lines that could have produced Marvin. He appears as Marvin E in the Holmes MS census, 1900, ed 43, page 25.
It seems most likely to me that he descends from Augustus Marion Slaton. Many of his descdants lived in Yazoo, and the E M below looks like him to me:
Slaton S B (Sarah) 1880 SC Cen Yazoo (385) MS 1826 (wid) mother fSC mSC LITCHFIEL D Joseph 1880 AL Cen Yazoo (385) MS 1843 hiredfGA mAL Slaton D L (Daniel Lavender) 1880 AL Cen Yazoo (385) MS 1856 sS BfMS mSC Slaton H T (Henry Thomas) 1880 AL Cen Yazoo (385) MS 1861 sS BfMS mSC Slaton S A (Sara) 1880 MS Cen Yazoo (385) MS 1862 dS BfMS mSC Slaton E M 1880 MS Cen Yazoo (385) MS 1879 gs S BfAL mAL The head of this family is Sarah B (Sloan) Slaton, widow of Augustus Marion. A M & Sarah had several sons and I suspect Marvin E is E M, listed in the census as a grandson. The loss of the 1890 census is felt here.
The probably father would be either John Thomas Slaton, James William Slaton, Daniel Lavender Slaton, or Zachariah Slaton. The H T above appears to have died fairly young, as no information has ever been found by me or presented to me by descendants. He may be a dark horse father for this man.
Hope this helps. If your interest in the Slaton family is more than casual, I can e-mail you the document with my research on this.
I do not, however, include Marvin & Annie in my treatment of these families because the connection is so fragile.
