Slaymaker, Englar, Kinzer, Carroll County MD
About 1982, my wife and I attended an estate auction in Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland. The auction was to settle the estate of Vivian E. Barnes of Westminster, known locally as the historian of the county. The auction went on for 2 or 3 days because she had an immense collection of books, quilts, coverlets, antique furniture, pottery, porcelain, silver, etc. We purchased a number of items including a Staffordshire teapot from the early 1800s. Inside was a handwritten note which reads as follows:
“This teapot belonged to ANN SLAYMAKER, 4th child of JOHN SLAYMAKER (my great-great grand-father) who was in Braddock’s campaign. In 1776 he marched at the head of a company to Bergen N. J. also in the skirmish on Chesnut Hill with General Bull.
ANN SLAYMAKER married JOHN KINZER 1796. Their daughter MARGARET KINZER married NATHAN ENGLAR (my grandfather and grandmother) 1832. So this teapot belonged to BETSY’s and MAUD’s great, great, great uncle and aunt. Probably dates back to 1800.”
