Hearld of the Valley 9-4-1820 Marriage Notices On Wednesday last, by the Rev. John Helms, Mr. Jeremiah Cook, to Miss Elizabeth, daughter of Abraham Beckner, deceased, all of this county.(John Helms, Methodist minister from Fincastle County, was said to have performed over 800 marriages.)Is this the same Elizabeth Beckner?I do not have the original of this notice; it was passed to me from another researcher.
I have a John B. Slusser who married an Elizabeth Smith within about the same time period.Children:William C. (ca 1829), Daniel S. (ca 1832), James P. (10 Sep 1834; date from headstone in cemetery on what was Slusser property), Mary A. (ca 1838), John H. (ca 1841) and Samuel H. (ca 1847).This is partly from the 1850 census (original census in court house). There was also a Nancy Hamblin (my great great grandmother) and a Martin Carson, age 81, living with them.He had a large piece of land in what is called the Mt. Tabor - Coal Bank Hollow section of Montgomery County. It has also been called Slusser, Virginia. He is buried in the Old Hale Cemetery near Mt. Tabor in Blacksburg, Virginia. Many of the Slussers are buried there. The James P. Slusser Cemetery is right next to it.
There was also an Abraham Smith close by, another large land owner. Jeremiah and Elizabeth Cook are not too far away.
I would appreciate any corrections, additions, or comments.
