When I first started looking I knew Robert had 2 sisters, this my Grandmother Rosie let slip.My dad thought maybe a brother, but Rosie said no.For some reason Rosie didn't want Dad to know about his Dad or family. She even changed Dad's name from Robert James Jr. to Junior T..She didn't apply for the birth certificate until Dad was 20 yrs old. I was given a tip to check www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates forAlice Eudora Miles in New Madrid Co., MO. They have her father listed as Clayton Smalley. You can also check this site for Robert James'.
James C. Smalley & Surilda A. Cronch were married May 8, 1879 in Marshall County, KY.They had 3 children:
1)Alice Eudora b. 29 Mar 1881 Marshall Co., KY d. Nov 11, 1918 New Madrid Co., MO m. May 30, 1899 Pulaski Co., IL to John Shepard Miles (JS Miles) www.sos.state.il.us/department/archives/marriage.html
2)Kate/Anna b. June 1886Marshall/McCracken Co., KY d. 1909 McCracken Co., KY m. Nov 13, 1909 McCracken Co, KYHerman Duck Campbell (The records show her as Kate & Grandma Rosie called her Anna.So there may be a fourth but I haven't found her, yet.Rosie said she died in child birth.I was pregnant at the time & the reason for the slip up)
3) Robert James b. Feb 22, 1889 Ragland, McCracken, KY d. Jan 30, 1934 Ash Hill, Butler, MO m. June 3, 1917 Dunklin Co., MO Rosie Myrtle McNeal (McNeil)
In 1900 census Robert & Kate (Smallest) are living with Grandmother Drucilla (Cranch) Cronch, Aunt Nancy & herhusband Macom A. Lane (Makena Lane)in Woodville, McCraken, KY. Can't find Robert in 1910.
In 1910 Kate/Anna's 2 children are with Alice & John (Bud) Miles in District 8, McCracken, KY.Can not find Robert.
In 1970 Houseman Precint, Graves, Ky There is a Clayton Smalley (15) working on Joshua Boaz's farm. James Henderson has his son, James P.(15), on that Census in Symsonia, Graves, KY. May be same boy going home on weekends. In 1860 Benton, Tenn the Smalley's were spelled Smawley or Smawly.James is with Abosalom & Martha District 5. But Henderson District 7 has no James & should. He may be visiting Grandpa or (As I was told) A. Smalley & Martha's?
Do you think A. Smalley is not Abner, but Absalom?
In 1860 Census in Benton, Tennesee:
District 5 Abosalom Smawley1800 NC Harrison Smawly1818 TN
District 7 CC Smawley1833 TN JA Smawley1826 TN Henderson1835 TNthis one matches James Henderson
District 8 JP Smawley1820 Tnlives next door to Burrel Bell John Smawley1796 NC
In District 2 Carter, TN there is a DW Smawley 1821 Tn There are Smalley's in Tn, I just thought this strange that all their names were spelled with a "w".
So what I'm thinking maybeAbner Smalley & Nancy Murray in Burke, NC in 1790, 1800, & 1810 may be the parents of Abner Jr. 1794 (dies in LA), John 1796, Absalom 1800 (A. Smalley in TN), and Agnes 1801 (died in LA).I am probably wrong since I'm pretty new at this.Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.I have 2 trees I m keeping cause some things just don't add up or I don't know where to look.
Anyway, hope this explained your question and probably other sinced I rambles on.But now Maybe you could give me your opinion on mine!Who is James Clayton's father, James Henderson or A. Smalley? Who is A. Smalley= Abner or Absalom?Who is his mother?Do you have death records on James or Surilda? I just wish there was such a thing as a time machine.
