We are over 60 kits now in the Smelser / Smeltzer portion of our DNA project. We've added LOGSDON and WALDROP / WARDRIP family components that include some matching to SMELSER / SMELTZER as well as being stand-a-lone projects. In total across all three projects we have about 115 DNA test kits on record.
I'm pleased to report today that our investment in the Family Finder portion of our overall DNA project is starting to "pay dividends" ..... we've had not one but TWO confirmed cousin matches today across two separate family sublines .... the first being in the descendant line of David SMELSER b. abt 1772 (maybe 1776) .... probably in VA / NC. We have three FF test kits from that subline in our project and one who we know matches the EPPRIGHT family ...out of Missouri. The really important piece is that we know this connection fairly well and are working with the person who we match as we speak. The second is in the line of Jacob SMELSER b. abt 1760 UNK ... matching to a RICE family out of Oregon through the line of Isaiah SMELSER b. 1801 married to Nancy Green HUSTON in Hart County, Kentucky. This one is significant because to date we have been unable to locate a living male SMELSER descendant of Isaiah and Nancy's to participate in the Y-DNA portion of our DNA project. Now with this Family Finder (autosomal test through Family Tree DNA ... www.ftdna.com ) we've been able to essentially see around that "brick-wall" and all indications are that Isaiah can now be confirmed as being a true SMELSER. There was little doubt to date based on paper-trail BUT we lacked any tangible proof of his birth ... so, now we believe we have it. We will continue to sort out other options but it's lookin' good so far !!!.
Our DNA "matches" database has surpassed 9000 entries. The chromosome database over 21,000 separate spread-sheet entries and growing. The project has about 25 kits under our management directly and about 30 cooperator kits, folks with substantial matching to our projects, also involved with sharing their matches data. We will soon be over 10,000 entries in the matches database. This is wonderful data and useful to all SMELSER / SMELTZER family members or as a foundation to assist you in a similar pursuit with your family lines.
I'd be glad to chat with anyone of you about it if you have questions. Contact me via the forum or directly.
