George Smith (1840-1876 - Assyriologist/British Museum
Just wondering if anyone has information about the descendants of eminent Assyriologist George Smith (b 1840, Chelsea(?), England), d Aleppo, Syria in 1876).He worked for the British Museum from the 1860s until his death. He died leaving a widow (Mary Clifton Smith nee Richardson) and 6 children - Queen Victoria was persuaded to give an annuity (pension) to his widow - of £150 per year.
According to 1871 & 1881 census their children were:
Charles William Smith (b 17 Nov 1863, baptism St Andrews Islington, 24 January 1864); Frederick (W?) Smith b.c. 1866/7; Elizabeth M Smith (b.c. 1867/8);George (H?) Smith b.c.1869/70; Arthur W Smith (a baby at the 1871 census) and Ethel Smith b.c. 1875/6 just before her father left for his final expedition).
A friend asked if I could find out more.Mary Clifton Smith died in 1883 (Hampstead reg. district- which is now in London, England). With such a common name as Smith I've had no success identifying any of the children subsequent to the 1881 census (indeed Frederick and George were not with their mother in 1881 - were they lodging elsewhere or deceased?).
Does anyone know any more of this family?
