Hi Steven, yes I am very familiar with your Phereby Smitherman b. 21 Jan. 1846 Bibb Co., Al. d. 3 May 1922, who married Henry Edward Longcrier. Phereby has TWO Smitherman lines of descent. Her father was John Smitherman b. ca 1818 (per 1850 Bibb) NC. Looking at the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census records you get different years based on age. John was the son of THOMAS SMITHERMAN JR. b. 14 Jan. 1788 NC, d. 21 Nov. 1872 (dates per his tombstone) in Bibb Co., Al., and ELIZABETH LOWDERMILK (dau. of John Harrison Lowdermilk and Mary Elliott). Thomas Smitherman b. 1788 was the son of THOMAS SMITHERMAN b. ca 1750 VA. d. 12 Dec. 1812 NC. (NOTE: Phereby's second line is through Thomas b. 1750's brother William b. ca 1758 Va. d. 1821/22 Bibb Co., Al.)Phereby's second Smitherman line is through her mother. John Smitherman b. ca 1818 NC was married twice (both wives were first cousins by the way.)and could have possibly been married three times but that is not proven. John married first Phereby's mother DELILAH LAWLEY b. ca 1822 Al. d. before Dec. 1857. Delilah Lawley was the daughter of JOHN LAWLEY and MARY "Polly" LATHAM, who were married 2 Sept. 1820 Bibb Co., Al. Mary "Polly" Latham was the daughter of WILLIAM LATHAM and CATHERINE SMITHERMAN b. ca 1778/79 Va. Catherine Smitherman was the daughter of WILLIAM SMITHERMAN SR. b. ca 1758 Va. d. 1821/22 Bibb Co., Al. This second set of information came from the estate of William Smitherman Sr., and also the estate settlement of his son Jesse in 1863. If you would like more information please e-mail me. I have all of William Sr.'s line. By the way, I am also descended from both William Sr. b. ca 1758 Va. and his brother Thomas b. ca. 1750 Va., in addition to being a descendant of Sarah Lowdermilk Smitherman who was a sister of Elizabeth Lowdermilk Smitherman. I have the Latham information as well if you are interested.
