You will also find Neffs in the 1782-1784 Hampshire County census. As I recall the name was sometimes recorded as "Neiff". The Neff immigrants were of Swiss origins.
The Neffs are connected not only to the Smoots of Hampshire Co but the Canter family, who have connections to the Smoots when they were still in MD. You will find Henry Canter living on Patterson Creek in Hampshire according to the census. Make sure you check Hardy County records as well -- some of these lands from old Hampshire County are now located in what became Hardy County.
There are many direct descendants of these families living in SE Ohio. The families have been the subject of many a discussion at the Canter History Group to which I belong. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/canterhistory/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/canterhistory/
