I am hoping that someone will know more about this family and their tragic story. Hoping to find out Lydia's maden name. Does anyone out there recall this story?
Bluefield Daily Telegraph Tuesday, Jan 14, 1919 from the Princeton Bureau, Bluefield Telegraph, Jan 11, 1919 --------Mother and her four children Cremated ----Niece Also burned to death. Father and one little son barely escaping. With Jim Sneed and little son barely escaping with their lives, his wife and four of his children and a neice (reported to be the daughter of Everett Sneed) lost their lives in a fire which destroyed their home at Modoc six and a half miles up the creek from Matoaka, at an early hour Sunday morning, according to word recieved here from Matoaka, W.Va. Advices stated that rescuers were unable to reach the victims until the home had burned completely down and nothing was left of the bodies but the charred bones. Sneed was said to have built up a fire shortly before daylight and went back to bed, dropping off to sleep. When he awoke the house had so nearly burned down that he had time only to snatch up one of the little children, a boy, and flee with him. It was thought that the building caught from a defective flue. Sneed and his family removed to Modoc from Camp Creek.
The names of the children and mother who died in the fire are: All for the date of 12 Jan 1919, the place of death is listed as Springton, Mercer County, Rock district:
1. Lydia Ann Snead- female- age 39yrs, 5mos, 18 days, housewife
2. Eva Snead-female- single- 13 yrs,2mos,14 days
3. Lettie Mason Snead-female-single 8 years
4. Francis Vernie(register looks to be Vernice) female-single age 1yr,8mos,3 days
5. Martha Emurline -female-single-14yrs,1mos,22 days
6. Mary Florence-female-single-age 12 yrs,7mos
That's all the info there is on the death certs, no parents or anything else in the register. I have been looking for the marriage of James and Lydia Ann but haven't found it yet-so I am not sure what her maiden name is.
Found in 1910 census Mercer Co, All Twp, Jumping Branch,ED 133(image # 30 at ancestry.com) James H age 33 Liddy age 30, Emma age 5, Florence age 4 Virginia E age ?/12 I am pretty sure they had more children after 1910 and before the fire in 1919. In the 1920 census James H has remarried to an Ella age 33 and had a son John Winfield born 1914 It is thought that James was able to rescue this John from the fire.
