My assumption is that Dinah and Lucretia were originally on the plantation of William D. Marrow in Sassafras Fork Township in Granville County. because he is listed above them on the 1870 census. In the early 1870s, Lewis, Dinah and children moved to Halifax County, presumably to the Everetts School Road area (between Littleton and Roanoke Rapids). I think this because the older folks say Lucretia and William were members of Carter's Chapel Baptist Church (which still exists today on that road), also because there are a lot of Newells in that particular area, and I know that Gertrude was born in a field at the intersection of Wright and Everetts School Rd. in what was the former community of "Hines Crossroads". Hines Cemetery, where Lucretia and Dinah are buried, is somewhere along Wright Road. On Afrigeneas' slave deed records for Granville County, NC, there is a mention of a "John Blackwell to William H. Webb: ....man named Lewis, fifty-five years of age..." in 1837. I believe this has to be our ggggrandfather since his last name was Blackwell and his mother was a Webb.
