(should read G.) 78 (b) Maine, Mary 69, Ali-- T. age 27 white female.1880 census Sheffield:Snelling, Chas. G. 89 (b) Maine w/parents (b) England, Mary 76, Paige,Lutie female 16, Paige, Murtie female 12, Paige,Ethell 7.Relationship of Paige Other.Found an Ethel M. Page of Sheffield who (m) a Charles H. Snelling of Sheffield in March 1890 in Glover,VTCharles G. is found as being (b) in Maine and Mass. in different census. There was an Asa Snelling in Andover,Maine in late 1700's and early 1800's w/sons Jason and Orson. (An Asa is said to be father of Charles G.)The following might explain why Charles is listed as (b) in Maine and Mass:From 1667 to 1780 Maine was part of Mass., from 1780 to 1820 Maine was called "District of Maine in Mass.", in 1820 Maine became it's own state. So Charles G. might actually have been (b) in what is now Andover,Maine and not (b) in Andover,Mass. Also in 1880 census his son George is listed as being of the mulatto race not white. This is only time any of them are called that and this is the only family member so far ever listed that way.I wonder if the Snellings were part Indian as I am from George and Lucinda and family says there is Abenaki blood but thought it was from Lucinda (the Thomas side) not from Snelling.Lucinda is called white in 1880 when George is called mulatto, the kids are also called mulatto in that 1880 census but never before or after. In 1870 census George has mulatto then it is crossed out and white added saying "listed as white in 1860".But by 1880 he is mulatto again.Lucinda and George are my line through their daughter Cora Jane who (m) Julius Waterman.
