Glad this is of some help..I sent alot of info over to you and it is probably hard to keep it all straight. You might want to print out my replies and put them in your research folder to reference later.Nothing is more flustrating than to spend weeks looking for something and then find you already had it or someone already sent it to you.Genforum prints out a nice clean copy by bringing up each of my replies, scroll down to the bottom of the page, click on 'printer friendly' and then click on print at the top of your screen.
Easy to miss things when you are switching around from different replies on your computer....such as the marriage record for Benson Snelling & Husband I sent you has the state on it; KY.
WPA; not sure I can explain it correctly but it was a works project that the federal government did during the deppression to create jobs. They went thru old county court records and extracted the info. Not every state did it or atleast not every state still has the data. Soooo, on the Indiana Marr Records online it simply has the bride/groom, date & location on it.But the original marriage record has more info on it than that. The WPA listing extracted William H. Snelling's father & mothers name from the marr record. That's how you can tell there was another Benson Snelling wife; Mary Dermit.
I would strongly suggest you order a copy of the 'original record' for the marriage of William H. Snelling & Brown....who knows what other info might be listed on it. As well as ordering a copy of both Benson & William H death record. And ofcourse both marriage records found for Benson. Documenting your family history is next to impossible to do without spending money for copies of those valuable original documents. Extractions are only as accurate as the eyes of those doing them.
Remember me warning you about how goofy the Snelling research on the Web can get??? Well I went looking for Benson's last wife, Catherine wd Buford.I found on a tree that she married Lawson H. Buford and found they on the 1850 KY, Oldham Co census as L.H. Buford & Catherine with their 5 sons..Oh, son Linza on the 1870 census is really Lindsey (go figure that one).Anyway, Catherine Buford widowed is listed on the 1860 IN, Crawford Co, Patoka census with her son.And you know she married Benson Snelling in 1869.But here is the kicker; someone posted that Catherine's name was Catherine Benson Snelling!!!!And there are many others that have repeated that. Catherine married Benson Snelling; Catherine Benson Snelling was not her name.
Keep working on your census records...they are so valuable. And ordering copies of those original records, not just index listings. And sometimes you have to spend money to prove that is not yours....I sure have done that often enough.
