Hi Carolyn:Please clarify what web site is PORTUGAL-L .Check out the greatly informative site "www.sephardim.com" that gives out all the Jewish names, recipes like "arroz com pollo" that the Cubans here in Miami take credit for,...My late grandmother from Rio was Gilda Macedo Soares Machado Guimaraes + Greenhalgh Ferreira Lima by marriage. She once told me that ARAUJO was also connected. Although she never explained her true origins, this sephardim site points out that all her surnames were Jewish (converted by force by the Catholic/Spanish Inquisitions, 1198-1832).She used to brag that her ancestors were great and some famous. Her father or grandfather was judge of the Supreme Court of Brazil and Chief Of Freemasons of Brazil. Another grandfather owned slaves in Bahia that he apparently treated well, according to her, and freed the minute they reached 21. Her cousin Bernardino Machado was the first president of the Republic of Portugal. What I found out is that Portuguese Jews escaped the Inquisition by immigrating to the Azores where there is a Porto Judeu, to the Canary islands, especially Teneriffe, to Brazil, especially to Salvador, Bahia, ... Her ancestors originated mostly from North Portugal, the Guimaraes area in Braga area. The Limas came from River Limia that changes name to Lima as it flows from Spain into Portugal, north of Braga. The name Machado, which means machete, oiginated circa 1200, when Martin Martinez Pires(?), the illegitimate( later raised to nobility) son of Portuguese king Sancho I Henriques and Dona Maria Muniz de Rivera, apparently Jewish, and his sons, defended the castle in Guimaraes, and chased away the Moslem invaders with machetes. Who knows? We might be distantly related to Geraldo Rivera, TV personality in the U.S. & Puerto Rico. One thing that the Inquisition that lasted 600 years taught many is to keep quiet about Jewish origins in Catholic countries. Brazil is a great melting pot. Live & let live.
