Hi. I will join in on your discussion. I just started documenting my genealogy using Family Tree Maker version 10. My parents Harry Edgar Soehner 17 August 1917 and Marjorie Elizabeth Mulholland 11 February 1920 have considerable knowledge on their roots. Both were born, grew up and stayed in Elmira, Ontario. Both were the oldest in their large families, and they are alive today.
Dad told me last week that he thought the Soehner story was that there were three brothers who came over to North America in the 1850's with Henry settling in what is currently known as Floradale, Ontario (5 miles north- west from Elmira) and another brother perhaps a Fred in Hamilton, Ontario (60 miles south-east from Elmira) and a third brother, perhaps a Carl? that went to Ohio. Have a look at the map to see where the Ontario places are.
My dad was the oldest of 7. His dad, Henry Philip was one of six or eight, and his dad, Fred again one of six or eight. I was not clear on the numbers and names but will in due time, check this out. They have written documentation, but my dad is now blind and mom has limited energy to participate. I do not know detailed names and dates at this time. My oldest brother will be visiting the family home in mid-March to read me the data over the telephone for computer input here in Calgary, Alberta.
What am saying, is that there a quite a few Soehner descendants in Southern Ontario (Elmira, Kitchener, Waterloo).
There is a Henry Soehner in the 1871 Ontario census (www.archives.ca) a waggonmaker, German born, Lutheran, who I am told by my dad, is a great-great grandfather of mine.
