Sorry for the delay in responding to your posting. Based on what information we have I’m not sure we can be certain you Sonntag and mine are connected. Here the additional information I have.
Gustav is the eldest sibling for whom I have a birth date.He and his family immigrated to the U.S. arriving on the S.S. Weser 12 April 1889 at Baltimore, Maryland. The ship’s manifest doesn’t show a former residence only the country. He went directly to Cleveland, Ohio where his brother (my Gr Grandfather) Carl Sonntag was living.Gustav’s military release record shows his residence as Chottshchewke, Pomerania. He died in Cleveland on 22 Jan 1903 before detailed death records were required so no parents’ names were shown. One son survived him so there are Sonntags in California and Colorado and Ohio from his line.
Carl Sonntag arrived in the U.S. on 20 Mar 1881 on the S.S. Leipzig at Baltimore, Maryland and came to Cleveland, Ohio. His immigration manifest again gives only a country of origin. His naturalization record dated 7 Nov 1884 says he was born in Lauenburg, Germany. He died 7 Mar 1931 in Cleveland and his death certificate shows his father as Karl Sonntag and his mother is unknown. All surviving children were female (6) so no Sonntags remain from this line.
Herman C. Sonntag and his family arrived in the U.S. at Baltimore on the S.S. Munchen on 30 Mar 1893.The ship’s manifest shows Kleinmassof, Germany as their last residence. He died in St. Louis, Missouri on 31 Oct 1937 and his death certificate shows his father as Albert Sonntag and his mother is unknown. There are Sonntag descendants in the St. Louis area from his line.
Two son’s (Bruno H. & Walther Fredinand Behnke) of a Sonntag sister (Ottilia Matilda Sonntag or vise versa) arrived in the U.S. on 9 Nov 1924 on the S.S. Republic and immigrated through Ellis Island, New York.Their U.S. destination is shown as St. Louis, but they also spent time in Cleveland.Walther died in Cleveland on 15 Jan 1999 and Bruno in St. Louis on 26 Non 1966.I have a marriage record for Bruno which shows his father as Ferdinand Behnke and his mother as Matilda Sonntag.I also have a death certificate for Bruno which shows his father as Ferdinand Behnke and his mother as Ottilia Sonntag.Additionally, I have copies of letters written from Germany at the time for Carl Sonntag’s death which are from Bruno & Walther’s parents (Fredinand & Ottilia Behnke (in Lauenburg, Germany), their sister (Helena Behnke Gesehke in Stettin, Germany), and possibly another sister Erna & Georg Relow or Below (in Lauenburg).
Two additional names I have for sisters in this family are Bertha and Pauline, but they presumably stayed in Germany (Pomerania) and I know nothing else about them.I have 6 or 7 photos taken in Lauenburg in approximately 1875 and young families and children, but have no information as to their identities.I am in contact with descendants of Carl, Gustav and Herman, but with no one in present day Germany.
I hope this helps out, but at this point the only way I see to make a definite connect is through church of civil records from Germany which have been microflmed by the Mormon church in Salt Lake City, Utah.I’ve had good luck with these records for other lines of my family, but haven’t looked at any yet for Pomerania (Lauenburg).
