Hello Leo -Thank you for all your helpful comments and suggestions as to research.Between 1685 and the early 1700s about 60,000 Huguenots came to England, mostly to the London area. Some were very wealthy, but many were poor and mainly settled in the Stepney and Bethnal Green areas where they became silk weavers.
I believe my earliest ancestor was William Sorell, a Weaver, who married Katherine Whitehead in 1731/2, (noted in the Fleet Marriage Register), and they lived in the St. George in the East parish. There is no indication as to which area of France he came from however.
I have had a look at the Delafontenelle site, which lists a number of Sorel families, but cannot see any connection to my own line.
I hope that one day I shall find the 'missing link' and find a place of origin in France.
