It has been a year or longer since I explored my South line.Just found your post for Sept. 1999.I have my line back to Elijah South b. abt. 1793 married to Roda Anders b. abt. 1800.A great aunt (now desceased) said that the Souths came to the Eastern Coast in the 1600s from France (Huguenots maybe??)The name was Southe, then Southey, then just South. The record that I have shows Elijah's parents are Joseph South 1771 and Mary Box 1771.Elijah left South Carolina in 1817 for Tuscaloosa Co. AL.
My question to you:Do have anything about where in Europe the South's came from, especially anything about my line?A French Canadian said that South in France could be spelled Southey or Sothey with emphasis on the second syllable. Will appreciate hearing from you.
