Military Honor Guard services were held at Euchee Valley Memorial Park, Cushing, OK, with Rev. Tracy Scheer officiating. The son of James Claude Southward and Anna Mae Keith Southward, he was raised near and graduated from high school in Zaneis, OK, where he was on the high school football team. Following graduation, Burl's Army National Guard unit was called into action during World War II, and he served valiantly for five years and participated in several invasions including Sicily and France.
He wed Hazel Colline Southerland on July 5, 1941 in Healdton, Ok, and they were married for 63 years.
Upon completion of his military service Burl he worked many years for General American Oil Co. and moved from Walters, OK to Purcell, OK and finally to Drumright, OK, in the early sixties. He retired at age 62, and he and Colline began an adventure of boating, fishing and traveling with their travel trailer. After the death of Colline in 2004, Burl moved to the Baptist Village in Cleveland, OK., and later on to the Cimarron Pointe Care Center in Mannford, OK.
Burl was preceded in death by his wife Colline, in 2004; his daughter Anna Burlene Mayden, (1946-2005: Parker Cemetery, Hurst, TX); his granddaughter Amy Lynn Southward, in 1973, Cushing, OK; his brother Ted Southward and his parents.
Survivors include: his son Michael Southward; son-in-law Jim Mayden; grandchildren Michael and Jason Mayden, Andrea Heinig, Steve Southward, Alicia Johansen; ten great-grandchildren: Claire and Brooke Mayden, Grant, Brady and Drew Heinig, Mazee and Emmy Southward, and Brent, Kaylee and Garrett Johansen; and one sister, Claudia Knutson.
