I am related to the southwick family of Collins, New York throught the union of Wheel Branch Southwick's widow Ellen J. Bersee Southwick's marriage to my GGGGrandfather in Anderson County, Kansas. Wheeler Branch was killed on 27 June 1864 at City Point, Virginia during the Civil war.Wheeler Branch;s mother was Sophia Smith who married Job Southwick. Her father was Wheeler Branch Smith b CT, which is where the family came from and died at Gowand, Erie County, NY.Charles Smith my GGGGrandfather married Ellen J. Bersee and I have been told he was a cousin of Wheel Branch Southwick, Ellen's husband.I know that Charles assisted her with living after Wheeler's death and later married her.My question is:
Does anyone out there know if any of your Smith family could be related to Charles or Sophia Smith of the North Collins area.
I know nothing of Charles family but that he married Harriet Terwilliger in NY, moved to Ohio, to Missouri, to Kansas in about 1875 to Moran where he and Ellen lived between there and Oregon.I have heard things about Indian ancestry on thie side but nothing points to it at all.I know nothing about Wheel Branch Smith but he was married to Priscillia Sturtevant in abt 1798. Wheelers Branch Smith's father was Simon Smith who married Eliza Wheeler (where the Wheeler middle name from), Simon was born in Hamshire Co., MA in 1746.
I know that my Charles and Emmit Wheeler Southwick purchased land in Allen County, Kansas in 1884 which was transfered to him in 1887 by deed.Emmit is Ellen and Wheeler Branch Southwick's son who lived in Allen County, Kansas.
Burt his brother lived in Allen County, Kansas tioll 1889, then Topeka, Kansas in 1889, where daughter Dessie was born, then to Woodson, Kansas where Dollie was born, the 1895 Census puts in Geneva Twp, Allen County, Kansas, 1899 birth of son ernest in LaHarpe, Kansas, 1900 census Promise, Wallow County, OR till after 1918, death occured on 19 Dec 1923. His wife Louisa Patterson died on 01 Mar 1926, Boise, ID.
I am trying to connect the families in NY.Any information would be greatly appreciated as well as any information about photos of any family member.
I have been working on genealogy for 25 years but this one has me against a brick wall!
