Thank you for the information on your side of the family.I believe that the Beers 1893 information is probably the best. The Faust information is not very clear, except that there was not a Mattern in the people that sailed with him and his brother (and others). The Mattern that is the father of the John who is my ancestor landed at Williamsburg, and not the Philadelphia area.
This Mattern had two sons in Loudon County, VA before moving to Washington County, PA in 1780.They were John born about 1777 and Mattern (2) born about 1780 just before they left for PA.John married Susanna Redd in Washington County, PA in 1797 when he was about 20 years old.If Mattern (2) married Sarah Dunkin in 1796 he would have been about 17 years old.Do you know where he was married?
There is another Mattern Spahr that was in the Loudon County area about the time that the above Mattern was there. He was probably the son of Hans Ulrich and born about 1731.Faust suggests that he came to America before his father. He also had a wife named Mary. There is information which indicates that in about 1780 he, his wife and others were going west to find land when they attacked by Indians north of Wheeling, WV.Mattern and his wife were not killed, but they “disappear from the records” there.
This Mattern and Mary Spahr may have had a son that could be your ancestor. However, if the wedding took place in Washington County, PA, then first Mattern would be your ancestor married at the age of 17 years.
(There is lots more to this story, and I am trying to find the brothers and sister that came with Mattern to Williamsburg.
