Col Thomas Spencer and Lucy Ann Watkins are my Great Great Great Great Grandparents. This is what I know and I will share and maybe we can together fill in the blanks. Col Thomas Spencer was born in 1730 and he married Lucy Ann Watkins . Lucy Ann Watkins was the daughter of my 5th Great Grandfather Thomas Watkins and Elizabeth Anderson LeGrand. Our line has several first cousins marrying cousins and this is one of those cases. Now Lucy Ann Watkins and Col Thomas Spencer had 6 children one of which was my 4th Great Grandmother Susan Spencer who married a first cousin Col. William Benjamin Watkins.
Regarding Col Thomas Spencer :Col. Thomas Spencer, the progenitor of the Spencer family, was born in 1751 and died in 1806. He entered as Second Lieutenant, Captain John Martin's Company 4th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Army for the War of The Revolution on February 23, 1778; later joined the army and served as First Lieutenant for eighteen months and was promoted success sively to Captain and Major, serving in the Brigade of General Robert Lawson of Prince Edward County, in Lafayette's Division; participated in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Guilford Court House and in the surrender of Corwallis at Yortktown. Col. Spencer married he old Spencer homestead at then Fariston P.O. in Charlotte County. Col. Spencer commanded the Charlotte Rifles, the first company formed in Charlotte County for the War between the States, in the 18th Virginia Infantry, which Regiment was among the first to engage in the First Battle of Manassas. He was later commissioned Lieut-Col. and assigned to the Reserves in the defense of Richmond in Ewell's Corps, and had the unique distinction of being the ranking commissioned officer of that great corps, the remnant of which surrendered at Appomattox, where he acted as Lieut-Gen by order of General Robert E. Lee and paroled the Corps. No other such case is recorded in history. * Now I have Col Thomas Spencer being the son of Thomas Scott Spencer Sr. and Elizabeth Julia Flournoy. Thomas Scott Spencer and Elizabeth Julia Flournoy had two sons Col Thomas Spencer and John Spencer. Col Thomas Scott Spencer was the son of : William Nicholas Spencer and Elizabeth Magruder.
