Spicknall Myths
Rockbridge Virginia or Rockingham Virginia this idea came to life as early as 1930, E. Frances Wheldon out of Minnesota wrote a letter of inquiry about Rockbridge County for Leonard Spicknall, but she also asked about another relative of hers William Miller who really was from Rockbridge she got these mixed up and the myth goes from there. Then in 1941, application 329163 from Francis Doran Wheldon was the first one of us to apply for Daughters of American Revolution. Then the next 5 applications refer to 329163 as being the source of correct information, and if you get a copy it has been lined out by the Daughters of American Revolution.Rockbridge Virginia was not formed until 1778.Leonard Spicknall the first was not born there, his birth records can be found in St James Parish Herring Creek Maryland with his younger brother Basil Spicknall.
This first application 329163 from Frances Doran Wheldon 1941 had many errors on it and everyone there after refers to this exact number.Leonard Spicknall did not fight with George Washington’s Army, but was a patriot in the militia which was like the national guard available when needed. He fought under Charles Williamson Division with the militia out of Calvert County.Reference:The Maryland Militia in the Revolutionary War. This idea comes right off this same application from 1941.The Daughter of American Revolution are careful to always mark this off when other applications are sent in, 5 more at this time, refer to this information and are marked of by the committee.
Spelling of Spicknall name present till 1770, Spickernell 1770 till 1571, Spigurnel 1571 until 1100’s or earlier.Of course people didn’t always get a education nor were they exact ontheir birth and death dates .Many of them still put an X for their mark. From present till 1770 there have been variations such as Spicknell, Spikernel, any way that could be imagined.
Spicknall’s were not French Huguenots, they were very much English. They first arrived in England in the 800’s on Viking long boats from Denmark, their leader Skeggi. There were 4 or more Kings of England for different areas. This was going to be battled out latter, among the Kings who were in charge. The Danish Vikings that settle on the land, people took notice of how law abiding they were and followed the rules they were appointed with great trust to Judges, Barons, Knights, and Lords to the King and always allowed at court. The first home of notice was in Nottingham in a town of Skegby. There are official ruins there that were owned by the Spigurnels.First by Godfrey Spigurnel then on to Henri Spigurnel. These ruins are still visible today and maintained.French Huguenot idea probably came from the family of Leonard Thomas Spicknall and Mary Ann Whitaker, married April 14, 1863.Her mothers last name was Hannah Vasey which is French, she was born September 25, 1808.It came from French Normans, first hired to protect the land of England, but became so strong he had them deported mostly to Ireland for everyone’s safety. They were called De Vasey.
