Origin of Spisaks - which Starina
My grandfather John Spisak (Ioann or Jan or Ivan) was born in Slovakia probably Jan 14 or 15, 1894 to Foedor (or Theodor) Spisak and Anna Surina. He had a brother Michael (Michail), George (Georij), Basil (Wasil, ?William) and sisters Anna and Mary (Maria or Marija). We believe Wasil emigrated to Canada and Anna to the Pittsburgh area where she married John Metzar (and may have later moved to Binghamton, NY).Michael settled in Binghamton NY and married Anna Miller and had children George (4/27/09 - 1/20/06) and Susan. Anna also settled in Binghamton NY and married a Mr. Hamer.
My grandfather emigrated to Binghamton NY in approximately 1910. We know he came from the village of Starina (? Stzarina).HOwever, there are two Starinas in Slovakia today!Family lore says that his is the one in far Eastern Slovakia (near Snina) that is now underwater from the building of a dam.HOwever in my recent research the vast majority of the Slovakian Spisaks come from the Spis region, which is pretty much where the other Starina is (near Stara Lubovna). Can anyone help with this one?Is there a way to find out which Starina he came from?Is anyone on this list related to any of the Spisaks I have mentioned?(It seems Anna and George and John and Michael were the most common Slovakian names, and if you look at SS death records there are hundreds of them!)
