Melissa,
Thank you for your reply. As a matter of fact just this week I figured out what LDS meant and went over to the Mormon Church that is only a few blocks from my home. And you are absolutely correct, they have separate records for the two villages.Unfortunatly there will not be time for me to do the research before my trip because they are closed most of August.
From what I have pieced together from various websites, it looks like I have several options for research there -
1.write a letter to the priest (done, no response yet, however the church has gone back and forth from being Greek Catholic to Uniate (Orthodox) - depending on which one the current government decided to declare illegal, my current contact there is Uniate but before 1900 my ancestors were probably Greek Catholic so I'm not holding my breath
2.Write a letter to the Mayor with postal reply coupons - sample letter found on a website
3.Ask the Embassy to help me - looks like it costs about $50 - 100 and takes about 5 months
4.Pay a professional searcher - lots more expensive
It sounds like I should not expect to be able to search town hall records and might not even be able to search church records on site inSlovakia.I am hoping the cemeteries will be few and have records and maybe I can at least I can find grave sites (although my great grandmother sent her kids here when she was widowed because they were starving,so it seems unlikely she'll have a headstone.
Any other hints from folks out there to find any living relatives?
