I have been doing a bit of research on those missing bits on my Family Tree and thought that it may be a good idea to share it with you.
According to the records on my FFHS pre-1855 CD, James Spittal was interred on 8th January, 1836 at Markinch at the age of 71. However, the only individual that appears to fit the bill is James Spittal who was born on 16th October, 1763 at Markinch, which would have made him 72 years old. If I'm correct, then this James married Janet Philp in October, 1762 at Markinch. They had a son whom they named Philip.
Philip Spittal presents a bit of a problem to me. It would appear from he IGI that Philp lived at Arngask in Fife for a while because three (at least?) of his children were born there, i.e. James who was christened 9th October, 1825 at Arngask, but who was interred at Markinch on 11th July, 1836 aged 10. Robert Jaffray Spittal christened 23rd November, 1827 at Arngask and their brother, Thomas Spittal christened 30th May, 1830 at at Arngask.
Notice anything missing? You've got it in one - I havent once mentioned who the mother of these children were. I thought I would look at the 1841 Census to see where these individuals were living, just about five years after the death of the 10 year-old James Spittal. Not a light!
Being an inquisitive old so-and-so, I would love to know who the mother was, and what happened to this branch of the family.
