Hello, Loudene -
By 1880, I can only find one SPATZ / SPOTTS sister, "Maggie" (my great-grandmother).Leonard and his four sons continue to be listed in later Census records.I hope very much that the other two girls were simply missed in the 1880 census.Perhaps they were visiting other households in 1880 and in later records show up under husbands' surnames.
You don't see "Maggie" in the 1880 Census because she is already married to my great-grandfather!They lived together in Florence until she died.He remained a widower until his death. (We spoke by phone years ago and I filled in details about this branch for you at that time.)
My guess is that Leonard (my great-great-grandfather) came to this country unmarried - but - am not yet absolutely certain.
If you look very closely at the 1870 Census image, you may decide to change "Delaware" to "ditto" for Elizabeth's birthplace. It would be easier if Elizabeth were born in Delaware - then it would be logical that she met Leonard in the US and he came here single.I hope this helps you save time searching in Delaware records, assuming you agree.
Paging through the 1880 Census for Florence, NJ, it seems that the main employer is the "foundry" (RD Wood & Co.).The other major employment was in agriculture and at the brickyard.Additional occupations include shirt factory jobs and "misc" occupations (dentist, real estate, retail, etc.)
If anyone identifies Leonard's birth place and his wife's (Elizabeth's) maiden name and birth place with certainty, I would be grateful for that information.Until then, I'm still looking!
