Democratic Convention Nominations ~ 1877 ~ Jos. Sprott ~ Iowa
The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Saturday, July 24, l877
At the Democratic Convention, Saturday, a ticket was selected that will compare favorably with any nominated by either party for years past.
MR. S.H. MALLORY, the nominee for Representative, has probably done more for the county's welfare than any other half-dozen men. He is well known as a shrewd business manager, a hard worker, and of good morals. He is a man of the people, has invested his means here, and his interests are the interests of the people of the whole county. His election would confer a favor alike upon the State and County.
JOS. SPROTT, the candidate for Treasurer, has served satisfactorily as member of the Board, and he gave excellent satisfaction; is very popular wherever known. By untiring industry and good management upon his farm, he has acquired a competence, which he uses in a manner to benefit others as well as himself. His nomination was unsolicited by himself, but was the general outpouring of good feeling toward him as an endorsement of past official services.
The nominee for Auditor, ED. LEWIS, has lived in the county for years, and during that time had made but few, if any, enemies, but a host of warm, personal friends. His leniency toward those indebted to him resulted disastrously to himself only. He has a high sense of honor, is in every way qualified for the office to which he is a candidate, and no better man could be found in the county to fill it.
PROF. SIMSON has served as Superintendent, and with general satisfaction. His nomination was made by acclamation and without a dissenting voice. He is a school teacher of long standing, thoroughly conversant with the art of imparting information, and a person that will look well to the interests of the county and its schools.
MR. NICHOLS, of Jackson Township, the nominee for member of the Board, is just the man the western part of the County needs to represent them, and so far as ability is concerned, is head and shoulders above any of the present members.
