Interesting stuff (at least to me) from Gabriel Spruell's War of 1812 Pension Application:
War of 1812 Pension Application:
15 June 1871 ... Gabriel Spruell, aged 76 years, living in St. Clair County, near the county line, declared that he has been married but is now a widower... that his wife's name was Annie Robinson whom he married in Pendleton District, South Carolina on the ____ of 181_
16 December 1871 .... filed application, aged 77 years St. Clair, St. Clair Alabama that he was married to Annie Robinson in Pendleton District, South Carolina on the _____ day of _________ 1813 "or 1814" (handwritten above 1813).
... enlisted in Captain Robert Cunningham's Company of Co. of Lawrence Mannings regiment at Fish Dam Ford of Reedy River, Lawrence County, South Carolina discharged at Point Peter.
From Fish Dam they marched to Edgefield Court House, then to Columbia , to Charleston South Carolina, & to Sullivan's Island where he remained some months before going to Savanah Georgia to Point Peter where the river St. Mary's empties into the ocean. From there up the St. Mary's River to Camp Pinckney to a fort on St. John's River where he again remained for some months before marching down the river to Point Peter where he received an honorable discharge.
August 6th, 1872 -October 8th, 1872 Letters requesting expediting of pension to avoid attorney fees so that it "will feed & cloth him" ... Bolivar Eason of Coosa Valley, Easonville, St. Clair County attny for Gabriel Spruell ... other letters relating how Gabriel is unable to attend court, and take care of himself. ... D.W. Waitof Coosa Valley & Sam'l P. McClelen of Coosa Valleytestified to loyalty of Gabriel. ... had a daughter named Sarah Perrin, Eden PO, St Clair Alabama ... July 9, 1812 to Jan 12, 1814 serving1 year, 187 days.
February 14, 1874 Pension of $8.00 per month allocated.
Sept 8th, 1880 ... letter to Sarah Perrin stating that pension was dropped for not claiming the pension for 6 years, and would need to apply for restoration.Addressed to Sarah Perrin, Eden PO. St. Clair County, Alabama.
