Does any of the below work with what we know or don't know abt. the Spurgeon - Trent marriage in VA in 1805 and my family story abt. the moving back to NC and not moving to somewhere else in SWVA and on I guess to TN? And where does the William Bailey Spurgeon Bible fit in with either one of these stories? None of these folks, the Spurgeons or the Trents left a very clear history or records......!!!
To: Scott Trent - SC personal email message
Scott... This evening, I looked at the "Spurgeon Forum" and saw many postings that you posted in October 2007 on the Spurgeon & Trent families of SW VA..I noticed that you live in SC.Have you visited in Washington Co., VA or Russell Co., VA?
I am interested in William Spurgeon & Elizabeth Trent that married in Washington Co., VA in 1805.The reason that I am interested is that I am not sure of his parents!I would like to research this.My heritage is the:1)Immigrant William Spurgeon2) Col. William Spurgeon3) John Spurgeon4) William Spurgeon m. #2. Elizabeth Beard [the last name is not proven - family history]5.) William Spurgeon, Jr. m. Amanda Melvina Galloway.I have been to the grave site of #5, which has tombstones and the grave site of #4 stone for Elizabeth was a field stone with E S written on it. [William Spurgeon, the husband, also died in this county. The family did not know exactly where in this cemetery he was buried.]I have also been to the grave site of #3 in Tennessee. And I have been to the grave site of Mary Spurgeon, the wife of Col. William Spurgeon in NC.
I believe that there have been some mistakes made in this line. This year, I hope to learn more of the Spurgeons in Washington Co., VA and Russell Co., VA.Col William Spurgeon had 2 known brothers. They were Samuel Spurgeon and John Spurgeon.During the Rev. War, John Spurgeon was living in SC.He was a Tory like his brother Col. William Spurgeon. This John Spurgeon was killed in the battle of Kettle Creek in Georgia. (taken prisoner & killed?).As you know Col. Spurgeon escaped with his life to Canada.Samuel Spurgeon apparently died a "natural death" during this time in NC. .... My educated guess is that the William Spurgeon in Washington Co., VA is the son of this Samuel Spurgeon.I would like to prove this... if possible. This William Spurgeon appears in the 1810, 1820 and 1830 censuses in Washington Co. & Russell Co., VA. --- My William Spurgin & William Spurgin, Jr. appear in theWashington Co., TN census during 1830. ... This may be the proof that is needed!
There is a Samuel Spurgeon that m. Catherine Lark, dau. of Christopher & Eliza Lark. This Catherine Spurgeon d. 23 Feb 1853 @ 59 yr. in Russell Co., VA.She was the consort of Samuel Spurgeon. She was born in PA and Samuel was born in Washington Co., VA.
The 1820 census Russell Co., VA. **William Spurgeon:1 male over 45; 1 male 16-26; 1 male 16-18; 1 male 10-16; 2 male under 10------ 1 female 26-45;1 female under 10.
The 1830 censusRussell Co., VA **William Spurgeon:1 male 60 to 70yrs.
**Samuel Spurgeon:1male 20-30yr;1 male 10-15yr;1 male 5-10yr;1 female 30-40yr;1 female 5-10yr.;2 females under 5yr.
I believe that your TRENT family lived in Russell Co., VA.Is this correct?Another educated guess is that this William Spurgeon in Washington & Russell Co., VA is probably the one that married Elizabeth Trent and that this was his 2nd marriage. In 1830, he was between 60 & 70 yrs old. This means that he was born between 1760 & 1770.
I do not believe that many in the Spurgeon family forum have researched this line living in SW VA.
Do you know anything about William & Elizabeth (Trent) Spurgeon's children from Washington & Russell Co., VA?Would love to learn of Elizabeth Trent's family.
My parents did alot of Spurgeon research in the 1970s & 1980s.Hope that we can share notes.
