good morning : i have much of the history back to the sir richard of wales, who was chief archer for wm. the conquerer at the capture of england in approx 1160.
the name stackpole is original before about 11-1200 second names were non-existant. william the carpenter became wm. carpenter, joe the blacksmith became joe smith etc.
our name originated at the 16000 acre spread given to sir richard in pembrooke wales, later to be known as stackpole court. (stood and used , a fortified mansion, untill 1986)
there is a series of volcanic rock that run out into the atlantic ocean at stackpole wales. this created a breakwater for the ocean and a safe haven for ships during storms thus it became known as the stackpool. that estuary is known today as broadhaven.
sir richard was at the head of this pool and he became known as sir richard stackpoletherefore all stackpoles and derivatives be they deliberate or due to inability to write better than phonetic we have the various spellings.
there was a thomas stackpole captain co. d. 19th ohio (civil war)from canton (or cleveland) he formed the co.i believe he later was in realestate in shaker heights, oh.
there was one of my gf. brothers who was the black sheep of the family and did that trick a few times however he did not go back to ireland, he died in w.va.his father may have been mentioned in oral history and got mixed up.
email me with more particulars and i will see what i can do.i will dissapear from the net in about a week and will not be back till late march.
