Cleveland Stafford of Lansdowne, Ontario, Canada
I found a Stafford Genealogy in the New York State Library while there the last week in August. It makes the statement that "About 1720, three brothers, offspring of Lord Stafford, came to America and settled in Rhode Island. They were by name William, Henry and Job. William was a tailor by trade. Henry was a sea captain and commanded a West India Trading ship, Job was a weaver. Willaim and Job raised families, but Henry had no heirs. They all took up land and became large and wealthy farmers.
Thomas Staford was the son of William. He was born in 1726; married Thankful, daughter of William Braton of Rhode Island. They ahd four sons: Rowland, John, Palmer and Stutely, and one daughter, Thankful--who married John Sweet.
Rowland married Catherine, sister of JohnSweet. Palmer married Ruth, daughter of John Browning. John married MAry Squares. All these from Rhode Island.
In 774, just before the Revolution, Thomas, with all his family, moved from Rhode Island to Dutchess County, New York, when that country was entirely new. In 1785 they all moved to Danby, Rutland County, Vermont.
Rowland Stafford there kept a public house and farmed. John was appointed Justice of the Peace. They all remained there until 1795 when all except Stutely moved to Peru and Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York.
Stutley married Rebecca Doty, daughter of Norman Doty, and settlesd in Wallingford, Vermont, where he became a wealthy farmer and owned a grist mill. He had four sons: Palmer, Stutely, Norman, and John, and one daughter, Mary. the children I know little about. The father died of apoplexy while in the act of catching a horse in the yard before his door. He was 72.
PAlmer Stafford had six sons and one daughter. Palmer, the oldest, was killed by lightning when he was making fishline in an upper room in the house. The family were away from home and his body was not found until the next day. He was thirteen. The rest of the family moved from Peru to Hemingford, East Canada, in 1808, and the father died at the age of 73. . . . .
Rowland had four sons: John, Rufus, Rowland, Jr., and Cleveland. Also 7 daughters--Thankful, Marbary, Deleila and Mary (twins), Catherine, Prudence and Cahrlotte. . . . . . .
Cleveland Stafford married Sally, daughter of Abel Turner of Hungtington, Vt. They had three sons--Solomon, Jarvis and John, and one daughter Sally. He settled in Canada, west in Sansdown on the 14th concession. He farmed and kept a public house and died quite wealthy at the age of 68."
This is an inkling of proof that the Cleveland Stafford who lived in the Soperton area of Ontario, Canada was the son of Rowland Stafford, and not Palmer.
