I am almost certain of the following narrative but could use some corroboration if anyone recognizes any of the names.
Helen or Ellen Stalker was born in 1838 in Tillicoultry Scotland to William Stalker and his wife, Fanny or Frances Campbell Stalker.
In February 1858, Helen Stalker gave birth to a daughter, Jane, later known as Jennie.Jane's father was Alexander Scouler, but there is no record of a marriage, and Jane's birth records list her as "Jane Stalker or Scouler."
In the 1861 census, Helen, Jane, and a 5 month old boy, along with three of Helen's sisters, are living with William and "Fany" Stalker.
In 1868, Helen Stalker married William Isdale, and they went on to have four daughters, including Fanny Campbell Isdale, Elizabeth Moodie Isdale, and Wilhelmina Isdale who later married a Read.
About the same time, Jennie emigrated to America to live with her aunt, Margaret, married to a James Miller.I am almost sure Margaret was Helen's sister.Family lore says that Jennie came to America when she was nine, but in a later census, she says she came in 1873.
I can't find Jennie in the 1870 census, but by 1880 she had moved to North Adams, Massachusetts and married Philip Sime. They went on to have five children who lived to adulthood:Albert, Frances Ellen, Walter Philip, Lawrence Hiser, and Chester Isdale Sime.
In 1907 Helen came to America where she lived with her two daughters, Wilhelmina (Minnie), and Elizabeth (Bessie) in Massachusetts for the 1920 census.
I believe she died in 1923 in North Adams but haven't been able to verify -- the date comes from a letter in 1948 pointing out that Helen died 25 years ago today -- the letter is undated but the postmark on the envelope is October (day unreadable) 1948.
Bessie died in 1948, and seems never to have married.
Jennie moved to California with her daughter Frances and son Chester about 1920 and died in 1944.
Death dates of Fannie, Minnie, and the other daughter are unknown.
Would appreciate hearing from anyone who can verify or add to this story!
